Silica – Improving car performance and sustainability
One in five automobiles in the world use energy efficient tires containing Solvay Silica. Our high performance Zeosil® range of silica products* is used in place of carbon black to produce tires with a range of benefits, including:
- Low rolling resistance**
- Up to 7 percent fuel savings (around 300 liters / per set of tires ***)
- CO2 emission reduction
- No reduction in tire performance
- Substantial improvements in ice, snow & wet traction behavior
Since the invention of its Zeosil® range, Solvay and its customers have helped to reduce CO2 emissions by more than 40 million tons, the equivalent of 16 billion of liters of fuel saved.
With 20 years continuous innovation in this product, we now market the widest range of silica for the automotive industries and are continually improving our product. We are currently helping tires manufacturers to increase the silica loading in the tire to achieve even better performance and to extend silica technology to truck tires.
We have earned a market share of more than 60 percent. Our eight sites form a global industrial platform allowing Solvay to supply a global specification for highly dispersible silica*.
This helps us serve the growing needs of our global customers.
* Highly Dispersible Silica is a highly engineered breakthrough used along with the rubber in tires. Made from sand, it is used to transform the performance of the tire for both fuel efficiency (easier for the tire to roll) and safety (improved traction) without sacrificing the overall life of the tire.
** Low rolling resistance tires minimize wasted energy as a tire rolls, thereby decreasing required rolling effort — and in the case of automotive applications, improving vehicle fuel efficiency.
*** Savings calculation based on the assumption of 15,000 km per year and an average life of a tire of 4 years.
