Calcium and Magnesium Derivatives

Calcium Chloride is one of Solvay's oldest products, and it still remains important today. Over the years, Solvay has adapted the applications of CASO® to meet the demands of users as diverse as the agricultural and food & feed industries and civil engineering. It is also used extensively in the oil industry, in water treatment processes, for treating roads in winter and summer, and for domestic and industrial dehumidification.

Our IXPER® products, based on calcium and magnesium peroxides, are used to provide the performance benefits of hydrogen peroxide (oxygen release, bleaching, reduction of odors, oxidation), delivered in a stable, sparingly soluble powder form. The intrinsic chemical stability and the thermal stability are excellent, whereas the solubility in water is very low. The characteristics of IXPER® products, and in particular their ability to release oxygen slowly, make them suitable for use in a wide range of applications.

Chlorine and Derivatives

We produce Epichlorohydrin from bio-sourced glycerin instead of propylene with the innovative Epicerol® manufacturing process, developed and patented by Solvay. 

The epichlorohydrin manufactured by Epicerol® has exactly the same physico-chemical properties and can be used as a drop-in substitute for traditional oil-based epichlorohydrin.

Flavors and Fragrances

Thanks to unique synthesis routes, Solvay also offers leading products for the food, flavor and fragrance industries, such as the Rhodiarome® ethyl-vanillin and Rhovanil® vanillin product ranges.

Solvay has developed specific environmentally-friendly processes which are fully integrated in a single site from catechol to ensure food safety and no cross contamination risk. These routes are acknowledged as the Best Available Technologies in terms of reduced water and energy consumptions to obtain for instance a chlorine-free vanillin, with a consistent high purity level.

Fluorine Derivatives

Solvay’s portfolio of fluorine products are at the forefront of many critical applications. From uses in the intricate etching of semiconductors to ozone friendly alternatives in polyurethane insulation products, Solvay delivers fluorine solutions with high-performance profile. 

With our state-of-the-art application technologies we serve customers with a full range of fluorochemicals. Our offer includes elemental fluorine, inorganic fluorides, organic intermediates and a large choice of fluorinated specialties.

Due to their unique properties, fluorinated molecules are key for the synthesis of active pharmaceutical and agro-chemical ingredients,brazing of aluminum heat exchangers (Nocolok®) and for electronic applications.

Lithium Derivatives

Lithium salts (LiTFSI - lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide) have become an essential component of Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

Solvay LiTFSI is the lithium salt market reference with outstanding electrochemical properties, high stability (chemical and thermal) that ensure safety and performance to its main end-use applications: electrical vehicles, e-bikes, flat panel screens, smartphone, laptop & powertools.

We also offer Lithium Cryolite (Li3AlF6), which is used for the production of abrasives, welding agents and soldering agents.

We are the leading supplier of peroxygen-based products to traditional industrial consumers – pulp and paper, textile and chemical manufacturing industries – as well as to leading applications, including aerospace, semiconductor and consumer electronics. 

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is mainly used by the paper industry to bleach pulp and to produce propylene oxide. Its properties are also of interest to many markets like chemicals, food, textiles and environment.

Phenols and Derivatives

Phenol and derivatives produced by Solvay are used in the production of synthetic resins employed in foundries, construction and abrasives. We provide substitute products that meet the current challenges of sustainable development thanks to a portfolio of competitive products and privileged access to bio-sourced raw materials (ethanol and glycerol). 

We also produce Diphenols, which are organic molecules resulting from the controlled oxidation of phenol. We provide in particular hydroquinone, catechol and derivatives: guaiacol, veratrole, guetol, ODEB, IBCH, PMP (Paramethoxyphenol), PDMB and TBC (tertio butylcatechol). These products fully meet the specific needs of the agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and monomer inhibitors markets.

Phosphorus Derivatives

Phosphorus derivatives are used in numerous applications, from water treatment to agrochemical products and fire protection, oil field drilling, fine chemicals and plastic additives.

Solvay holds leading positions in the Phosphorus Speciality market such as phosphine ligands for bulk chemical manufacturing and speciality organophosphorus intermediates for the pharmaceutical industry, designing custom-made and exclusive solutions in partnership with our customers, and offering a wide range RhodaPhos® products.

We are leader in textile flame retardant with PROBAN® solution that provides security and comfort to professional work fabrics.

Solvay provides a completely integrated polyamide 6.6 value-chain,including a comprehensive range of Polyamide 6 and Polyamide 6.6 resins and engineering plastics designed to meet customer needs in the automotive & transportation, electrical & electronics, consumer goods and industry & processing industries.

We also produce Polyamide performance fibers which have a multitude of uses, from providing comfort for furnishings, upholstery, automotive, carpet, textiles and sportswear, to extreme durability for protective gear, jet pilot’s clothing, industrial abrasives and electrical insulation. Solvay markets a wide range of polyamide 6.6 tow, combining different counts (from 0.9 dtex to 22 dtex), lusters (dull to sparkling), and cross-sections, and shows now a position of worldwide leader in flock tow for automotive application.

Solvay also offers soil release polymers to boost cleaning in washing powders and liquids to maintain fabric’s whiteness as well as a range of synthetic polymers for hard surface cleaners.

Committed to bio-sourced and renewable raw materials, Solvay boasts a broad range of polymers derived from the guar plant with breakthrough innovations that respond to strong demand for sustainable solutions from both the agrochemicals and oil sectors. 

Solvay's cellulose acetate is produced from bio-sourced raw material in the form of wood pulp from sustainably managed forests. Its cellulose acetate filter tow covers various specifications of cigarette filters including more environmentally friendly ones.

Solvay is also developing a cellulose acetate bio-plastic under the Ocalio™ brand, which is easy to mold and used in many common consumer products.

Rare Earths and Metal Compounds

Rare earths are natural elements present in large quantities in the earth’s crust. Solvay formulates rare earth and metals into high-technology materials for use in automotive catalysis (emissions control for gasoline and diesel vehicles) or electronic applications (phosphors for low-energy lamps, LCD and plasma flat screens, precision optics, etc.). 

Solvay offers leading materials for gasoline catalysis: Actalys®-Optalys® range is present in more than one third of catalytic converters worldwide. Solvay’s materials reduce usage of precious metals whilst simultaneously improving catalytic converter performance and durability.

Aluminas are a major component in automotive catalytic converters and complement Solvay's rare earth product range for automotive emission control systems.

Silicium Derivatives

High performance silica is mostly used in polymer reinforcement - in particular rubber and elastomers - or as "carriers" for powdered food ingredients. Its main markets are the tire industry, nutraceutics and toothpaste. 

As the inventor of high-performance silicas in the 1990s, and the current world leader in silica technology, Solvay was the first to introduce on the market a dust-free micropearl form of precipitated silica. Solvay has participated in the development of a variety of innovative products such as energy-efficient tires, which are used by the major tire manufacturers to reduce vehicle’s fuel consumption as well as CO2 emissions. Solvay’s latest innovation for the tire industry is the brand new Efficium® breakthrough Highly Dispersible Silica, delivering significant productivity benefits in handling, mixing and extrusion without compromising on performance.

Sodium Derivatives

Solvay produces more than 7 million tonnes of sodium carbonate both by the traditional Solvay ammonia process and by the refining of Trona ore. Our high quality soda ash meets customers’ specifications in accordance with all applicable safety, health and environmental standards.

Sodium bicarbonate serves the food and feed markets, the health sector, and is also used for flue gas treatment. For example, SOLVAir® Solutions help coal-based power plants, industrial or municipal waste incinerators to limit their acid gas emissions and improve air quality.

Solvay manufactures mainly two types of solvents: oxygenated solvents (acetone, acetic acid and its derivatives) and dibasic ester-based solvents, produced by diacid esterification with a number of alcohols.

Oxygenated solvents are used in the automotive industry (paints, metal cleaning), and industrial products (flexible packaging, coatings, adhesives, agrochemistry, textile, leather) or consumer goods. They have a high solvent power, low toxicity and a low impact on the ozone layer. They are biodegradable and are the primary alternative to chlorinated solvents.

Dibasic ester-based solvents are notably used in the treatment of metals and surface coatings, in paint formulations as well as in industrial cleaning. They are readily biodegradable, low VOC, non-toxic and eco-friendly; they address the strong growth in the demand for products meeting stricter environmental and use standards.

Wood Derivatives

Anticipating future trends in the energy market, Solvay is actively developing clean technologies to promote innovative alternative energy sources.

We also offer Accoya® wood, based upon acetylated wood technology. It modifies the chemical structure of natural wood by changing the free hydroxyls within the wood into acetyl groups. As a result the ability of wood to absorb water is greatly reduced, rendering the wood more dimensionally stable and extremely durable.
